How It Works

Minoxidil belongs to a class of drugs known as vasodilators. It works by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles. Thus, it promotes hair growth by providing essential nutrients to the hair follicles and boosts overall hair health. A person experiences hair shedding at the beginning which is due to the fact that the weakened hair follicles shrink and make space for new hair to take place.

Uses

Minoxidil tablet is prescribed for the treatment of the following conditions:

1. Alopecia – a condition that causes hair to fall out in patches.
2. Hypertension – also known as high blood pressure, it is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated.

Dosage

Minoxidil tablets are recommended to be taken once daily. This medicine can be taken with or without meals. Follow your doctor’s prescription carefully to achieve the desired results of the drug. The effects of this medication can be experienced 3-6 months after a daily dosage is followed.

Missed Dosage: If you missed the dose, take it as soon as possible. If it’s time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not consume a double dose or take an overdose to make up for the missed dose.

However, you need to make sure that you don’t miss your dose as hair loss occurs again when you miss taking your doses.

Overdose: An overdose of the drug can cause serious side-effects. If such a case arises, contact your doctor immediately.

Important Advisory

Before you take Minoxidil tablet, tell your doctor:

1. If you have a family history of hair loss.
2. If you are under the age of 18.
3. If your hair loss is caused by hair products, chemicals, or any other hair grooming products.
4. If you have heart disease.
5. If you suffer from uncontrolled blood pressure.
6. If you suffer from hair loss due to an existing health condition.
7. If you suffer from diseases such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, etc.
8. If you suffer from stress-related disorders.

Side Effects

Some common side-effects of Minoxidil tablets include:

1. Scalp itching
2. Rashes
3. Hives
4. Difficulty breathing
5. Dryness
6. Nausea
7. Vomiting
8. Headaches
9. Dizziness
10. Chest pain

In some cases, side-effects such as weight gain, rapid heartbeat, swelling of face, ankles, hands, or stomach can occur. If you experience any such symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

If you take any herbal, OTC, recreational, or any other form of drugs, let your doctor know about them. These drugs can interact with Minoxidil and affect the way it works.

2. Aspirin
3. Finasteride
4. Alprazolam
5. Corticosteroids
6. Levothyroxine
7. Acetaminophen
8. Guanethidine

Interaction with alcohol

Alcohol has been to cause skin dryness which is not good for your scalp. Avoid consuming alcohol along with this medicine.

Storage Instructions

Minoxidil tablets should be stored properly and safely in their original packaging.

1. Keep the tablets out of reach of children.
2. Keep the tablets away from heat, moisture, and sunlight.
3. Once the pack is opened, store the pills in an airtight container.
4. Do not consume the pills past their expiration date.
5. Store the tablets at room temperature.
